Unique in the Rhineland

A military road post was discovered on the western edge of the Königsdorf Forest, directly on the Via Belgica. It is the only facility of its kind in the Rhineland where the trenches and ramparts are still visible above ground today. This gives visitors a realistic impression of the dimensions of this monument. But be warned: on the way there – in the direction of Cologne – you have to climb a hill that can be quite strenuous. Just five kilometres further west, there was originally a civilian road station from Roman times.

Where was Tiberiacum?

Stone evidence of the Roman past was also found in the village of Thorr, which lies southwest of Bergheim on both sides of the Via Belgica, which still runs straight as an arrow here: matron monuments and the remains of a Mercury altar indicate the existence of a Roman sanctuary in the immediate vicinity. It is believed that Thorr is the Roman settlement of Tiberiacum.

If you take a detour to the centre of Bergheim, which was granted town rights in 1300, you will encounter the landmark of the district town: the "Aachener Tor" (Aachen Gate) was part of the town fortifications in the Middle Ages, large parts of which are still preserved today.
