A farmstead in Aldenhoven was first mentioned in documents as early as 922. However, it was not until the 16th century that the two-part moated castle was built. It consists of a Baroque manor house and an outer bailey. The manor house is the oldest part of the castle complex and is located in the centre of the building ensemble, while the outer bailey was only added in the 19th century.
Together, the two parts formed a defensive structure that was intended to secure the crossing over the Merzbach stream. The Köttenich estate, which also includes several old farm buildings, has always been surrounded by a double moat system.
Today, the moated castle has a new function. Since 2000, it has served as a residential complex for senior citizens and disabled people. To this end, the existing buildings were supplemented by a simple new building. The cafeteria is also open to visitors and guests. The centre of Aldenhoven is only a few minutes' walk away.
