Medieval meets modern hospitality: where travellers find accommodation today, the first knights lived around 1,000 years ago. Obbendorf Castle was first mentioned in 893. The current castle was built around 1180, making it the oldest preserved knight's residence in the Jülich region. Loopholes, battlements and corridors still bear witness to those ancient times.

The first known owner of the estate was Reinhard or Reichard von Obbendorf, who appears in the chronicles in 1301. In the 15th century, his descendant Count Schellard von Obbendorf sold the property.

In the following years, the castle changed hands several times, with new residential wings being added to the complex. The residents also converted the gate tower for residential purposes, removing the upper floor.
In the 19th century, the first commoners finally bought the former manor. During this period, the estate was converted into a farm. Today, the castle, which was renovated in 1995, is a quiet country estate with extensive grounds and houses a hotel.
