Roman roads formed an important basis for the development of the cultural landscape over the last 2000 years. Jülich owes its origins to the ancient long-distance road from Cologne to Boulogne-sur-Mer ("Via Belgica"). Roman Iuliacum was a road station at the crossing of the Rur. The cultural tourism cycle path from Cologne to Übach-Palenberg, part of the "Roman Road Adventure Region | Via Agrippa – Via Belgica" project, brings the Roman road to life.
The newly designed south-east tower of Jülich Citadel houses the Via Belgica information centre under the heading "Romans – Renaissance – Romanticism". The exhibition highlights the influence that the Roman road had on the development of Jülich: the Roman road helped to shape the identity and culture (Romans), the townscape (Renaissance) and the landscape (Romanticism). The Citadel Museum displays treasures from its collections for each era. Interactive media installations take visitors on a journey through space and time. A preserved excavation section through the 2000-year-old road allows visitors to see the history of the road from its Roman pavement to the asphalt surface of the 20th century.
The Jülich Citadel is one of the best-preserved fortresses of the early modern period and an outstanding sight. The jewel of the complex, built in 1548, is the east façade of the former ducal palace in the style of the Italian High Renaissance. The castle, with its exhibitions on the history of the complex and the new areas on the Via Belgica "Romans – Renaissance – Romanticism", as well as the elaborately restored fortress with its ramparts and casemates, are open to visitors.
